Old Time Homemade Maple Syrup

1 cup sugar

½ cup water

2 tsp oleo or butter

1 tsp maple extract

I’ve told you a lot about my childhood back on the farm at Rabbit Ridge, near Damascus, Ark. Our mother, Grandma Tindall and Grandma Duncan not only had to be thrifty but also creative. The above recipe is a good example. The ingredients may not be exact measurements, but close. Boil sugar and water to spin thread. Add butter and extract when done. This was served on a big biscuit as loaf bread was not available. Now, I’m pretty sure that you will probably never make maple syrup, but wanted you to have the knowledge of it.
